70 for 70: Old Boys and Friends' Golf Tournament
The 26th Annual Old Boys and Friends' Golf Tournament took place on May 27th and turned out to be a resounding success, despite the unpredictable weather. Morning and evening rain showers bookended the event, with the skies clearing just in time for the tournament itself, allowing all 143 golfers to enjoy a perfect day on the green.
This year's tournament set an ambitious goal of raising $70,000 in honour of the Old Boys' Association's 70th anniversary. Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of participants and sponsors, we exceeded this target, raising a total of $74,000. The funds raised will significantly impact the
Old Boys' Endowment Fund, the Old Boys' Trip Fund, and the Old Boys' Speaker Series Fund. The additional $4,000 will be directed to the newly established
Gryphon Fund, Selwyn House's first fund dedicated to athletics. Announced at the Senior Athletic Awards, this fund will address the growing financial demands on our sports programs, ensuring that we can continue to offer a robust athletic experience while keeping tuition affordable.
The day began with a warm welcome at the first tee by Headmaster Michael Downey, tournament founder William Daly '52, and Golf Committee Chair EJ Boffey '12. Their opening remarks set a positive and enthusiastic tone for the event. They also participated in the celebratory tee-off, which added to the excitement and camaraderie among the participants.
The success of the tournament would not have been possible without the generous support of our . We would like to give heartfelt thanks to the 11:11 Charitable Foundation, who was initially the Cocktail and Dinner Sponsor but stepped up during the event to become the Title Sponsor with an additional generous donation. A special thank you to the Parent Volunteer Association for providing delicious baked goods that added a personal touch to the event, making everyone feel at home.
While no Hole-In-One prizes were claimed this year, several notable awards were presented during the cocktail hour, expertly hosted by EJ Boffey '12. The Tim Shorter '81 Down Under Trophy, awarded to the team with the lowest gross score, went to Beck Majdell ’22 Pre-U ’24, Alex Henderson ’22, Joseph Belland ’23 Pre-U ’24, and Nate Mitelman ’23 Pre-U ’24. The Men's (Guest) MVP, which includes the honour of wearing the one-of-a-kind plaid jacket for the evening, was presented to Anthony Barrette. Matt Shadley '05 was named the Old Boy Champion, donning the coveted yellow jacket and receiving the William Daly '52 Cup.
Moreover, 14 additional guests joined the festivities during the cocktail hour, where everyone was delighted to welcome 2024 Olympic Wrestler Alex Moore '14. We are rallying behind Alex as he proudly represents Selwyn House and Canada on the global stage this summer in Paris!
As we reflect on the memories created and the bonds strengthened, we are reminded of the incredible power of coming together for a shared cause. Your enthusiasm and support have not only made this event memorable but have also inspired us to strive for even greater heights.
We look forward to welcoming you back next year with new additions, more fun, and the same unwavering spirit that defines our community. Until then, may your drives be straight, your putts true, and your hearts full. Thank you once again for making a difference.
