Extracurricular Activities

Extracurricular Activities (ECAs) at Selwyn House have a long and noble tradition. Working alongside the academic and sports programs, ECAs provide students with opportunities to practice and showcase their interests and passions. Some ECAs are performative, others are competitive, and some are done just for the love of honing a skill. We encourage all students to explore and participate in our wide selection of ECAs.



Debating

The Selwyn House Debating team has a long history of competition at the Provincial, National, and International levels. In this program, students learn to structure arguments and to compete in various styles of debating. Experienced coaches for the program teach students how to debate in the British Parliamentary Style, World Schools Style, Canadian Parliamentary, and Canadian National Debate Format. 
Students can join the debating team at any time throughout the year, and competitions are ongoing. The team often travels to tournaments around the city, province, and country to debate at the highest level.

Senior Play

The Senior Play is always a highlight of the Selwyn House artistic calendar. Students practice for months to entertain the entire Selwyn House Community. They memorize lines, learn blocking, and work with theatre professionals to bring a memorable experience to their audiences. Auditions are held at the beginning of each year, and the show takes place in April. There is a part for everyone in every production.

STEAM Club

The STEAM club is a project-based science and engineering club where students pick, develop, and engage with sciences according to their interests. From robotics competitions to exploring structures and collaborating with other students, the STEAM club utilizes the resources of the Selwyn House Science program and the ingenuity of our students to build, create, and learn through scientific exploration.

Chess Team

The Selwyn House Chess team trains and practices every week under the tutelage of a FIDE Master to become better and to compete in matches with other schools. Selwyn House participates in the GMAA Online Chess league as well as other tournaments around Montreal.

Wood Shop

In the Wood Shop ECA, students learn how to use state-of-the-art tools to design, craft, and build their own projects. Under the guidance of a qualified expert in woodwork teaching, the students learn to craft in a safe and encouraging environment. Whether they are building a bowl, a gilded trophy, an LED-lit chess board, or any project they can imagine, the wood shop ECA gives them the tools for the job.

Art Club

This year we have been proud to introduce the Selwyn House Art club. Students meet every week to learn new artistic techniques, practice their work, and contribute to long-term artistic projects. The Art Club is open to beginners and experienced artists alike, and provides a space for students to experiment and receive feedback for their work. Their work will be featured in the Selwyn House Art Fair this spring.

Senior Jazz Band

For any student who loves music, the senior jazz band is there for you. The band plays a variety of music throughout the year, and performs in concerts and at events for audiences to enjoy. The band collaborates with other schools as well, and the annual trip is often the highlight of the year. All levels and instruments are welcome.

Clubs

At Selwyn House, students are encouraged to explore their interests through student-led clubs. These organizations differentiate themselves from the Extracurricular Activities in that they are all student led and run. Clubs run according to the interests of the students, and any student who is interested in forming a club is encouraged to start one. Clubs typically meet once a week at lunchtime.

  • Chinese Cultural Club

    The Chinese Cultural Club is dedicated to teaching all students about Chinese culture and discussion of Chinese issues. Open to all students, the club helps to organize events throughout the year, such as our Lunar New Year celebrations, and educates the community about Chinese cultural traditions.

  • Contactivity

    Contactivity, a senior community center in Westmount, has partnered with Selwyn House to create intergenerational programming. This collaboration, initiated with a government grant during COVID to support isolated seniors, has grown to include several meaningful initiatives. Programs like Friendly Visits pair students with seniors for weekly in-person meetups, fostering lasting relationships, while Digital Literacy classes allow students to teach seniors technology skills. Seniors also engage with students by reading in elementary classes, and younger students serve lunch monthly at Contactivity, strengthening connections across generations.

  • Crochet Club

    New this year, the Crochet Club is organized by Mme Lucas at the request of students who wish to learn and practice crochet. Learn to make hats, scarves, and other clothing and accessories that you never thought possible.

  • Entrepreneurship Club

    Entrepreneurship Club is all about how to start and maintain businesses. The students learn about and discuss ideas for businesses, and learn about the mechanics involved in preparing for the business world.

  • German Club

    German Club is for students who want to learn about the German language and culture.

  • Investment Club

    Investment Club discusses financial markets and the world of investing. It often brings-in speakers from the worlds of finance and business to speak to the students about the mechanics and strategies of investment.

  • Jewish Student Union

    The JSU is a non-religious student club that discusses Jewish culture and issues. Open to all Selwyn House students regardless of faith or culture, the JSU is a welcoming environment that is committed to inclusivity, learning and dialogue.

  • Math Club

    Math Club is for students who are looking for a challenge outside of their regular math classes. The team frequents math competitions around the city and across the country.

  • Model UN

    Model UN is an internationally recognized activity for students where participants adopt a role in the United Nations and role-play international scenarios. It often requires weeks of preparation for conferences that go well into the night, and requires an understanding of international policy and

  • Music Production Club

    The Music Production Club is one of the most enjoyed at Selwyn House. Students use our state-of-the-art music studio to create sounds, mix samples, produce beats, and learn how to DJ to showcase their own music, or mix the music that they love. The Music Production Club can be found working at all hours of the day and night, and frequently show their skills in their Boiling Room sets.

  • PreMed Club

    PreMed Club is for students who are interested in a career in medicine. The club discusses medical issues and often has professionals from the medical world come to speak with them. They also consult with admissions officers and career counselors about the requirements for medical programs.

  • Sunday Supper Club

    Every Sunday evening, the Selwyn House community is invited to join Ms. Krespil online as she streams a cooking class from her kitchen. The end result each week is that students in the class will prepare Sunday supper for their families under her guidance. During the week prior to the class, students are given the recipe and list of ingredients that they will need for the cooking session. Learn to cook and give your family a tasty and healthy meal.
